The Honest New Parent's Guide to Baby Gear
Most baby gear guides are written by people who are paid to recommend products. This one isn't. Here's the honest truth about what's worth buying, what's overhyped, and what you'll actually use.
The Baby Gear Industry: A Brief Reality Check
The global baby products market is worth hundreds of billions of dollars. It's built on one emotion: parental anxiety. The message is always the same — buy this, and your baby will be safer, smarter, happier, better.
Most of it is noise. Here's the signal.
Worth Every Penny
A Good Car Seat
Non-negotiable. Don't cut corners here. Buy a reputable brand, have it fitted correctly, and replace it if it's ever in an accident.
A Portable, Washable Baby Space
The most underrated item on most baby lists. You need somewhere safe to put your baby when you can't hold them — and it needs to go wherever you go. The Avera Baby Space is the best version of this: breathable 3D mesh, machine-washable cover, folds to carry one-handed. It replaces a bouncer, a play mat, a daytime bassinet, and a travel cot. Worth every penny.
A Baby Carrier
Hands-free parenting. Invaluable for the first 6 months. Try before you buy — fit matters enormously. A carrier that doesn't fit well won't get used.
Quality Muslin Swaddles
Used constantly for the first year. As swaddles, burp cloths, nursing covers, pram shades, and impromptu changing mats. Buy 6.
Overhyped (But Not Useless)
Baby Swings and Bouncers
Some babies love them. Some don't. Borrow one before buying — you won't know which camp your baby is in until they arrive.
Baby Monitors with Every Feature
A basic monitor with video and night vision is all you need. The ones with breathing sensors, temperature alerts, and app integration are nice — but the anxiety they create often outweighs the reassurance.
Nappy Bins
A regular bin with a lid and nappy bags works just as well. Save the money.
Not Worth It
- Wipe warmers — babies adapt to room temperature wipes within days
- Baby shoes (newborn size) — they can't walk. Socks are fine.
- Elaborate nursery furniture sets — babies don't care about matching furniture
- Newborn toys — newborns can barely see. Save toys for 3+ months.
- Baby food makers — a blender works identically
The Bottom Line
Buy less, buy better. Focus on products that are safe, washable, portable, and versatile. Everything else is optional.
The Avera Baby Space exists because we believe in this philosophy. One product. Every room. Every stage. Built for real parenting, not perfect moments.
